I HAD AN ABORTION is part true confession and a big protest piece. Coming of age in the era of Roe v Wade, I straddled the legality of choice. Today, abortion is one of the most commonly performed clinical procedures yet a shaming admission and prohibitive topic of conversation. In the last year, we’ve seen attacks on the freedom of choice and outlawing certain procedures.

These paintings are a first attempt at admitting to and speaking freely about three aching choices I made as a young woman. The piece speaks to the freedom of choice and fear of regression. It’s painful, frightening, and necessary.

I’m eager to see the piece used in our work to guarantee a woman’s right to choose.
